BARAMULLA: Police have registered an FIR in connection with a landslide incident in the Khanpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, which is suspected to be linked to illegal stone quarrying activities.

The landslide occurred recently and triggered panic among local residents, besides causing damage in the affected area. Preliminary assessments by officials indicated that unregulated and illegal stone quarrying may have weakened the hill slope, eventually leading to the landslide.

Police officials said an FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of law against unknown persons involved in illegal stone extraction and quarrying in the area.

A detailed investigation has been launched to identify those responsible for carrying out unauthorized quarrying activities. As part of the probe, police are collecting evidence, inspecting the site and recording statements of local residents.

The district administration has taken serious note of the incident and reiterated its resolve to act firmly against illegal mining and quarrying operations that pose a threat to public safety and the environment.

Authorities warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in illegal stone quarrying, adding that such activities not only damage the environment but also endanger human lives.

Police have urged the public to cooperate with the investigation and report any information related to illegal quarrying activities in the area.
