Srinagar: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to convene an emergency Assembly session and personally visit Doda to assess the situation following clashes between protesters and security forces after party MLA Mehraj Malik’s arrest under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party also called on the people of the Union Territory to raise their voices in support of Malik, who represents Doda in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

“Our appeal to the Jammu and Kashmir government is simple: convene an emergency Assembly session, ensure the chief minister visits Doda, and personally evaluates the ground situation,” AAP Jammu and Kashmir spokesperson Muddasir Hassan said.

Hassan added that AAP leaders have been prevented from visiting Doda and that the party is being “silenced, as we are not allowed to speak freely to the media.”

Condemning what he described as “suppression of democratic voices,” Hassan said Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and former Delhi minister Imran Hussain, the party’s Jammu and Kashmir in-charge, were denied the opportunity to speak to reporters on Thursday.

“This is the dictatorship of the BJP. The voice of the aam aadmi is being crushed; we are not even allowed to speak, and media houses are being instructed not to cover us,” he claimed.

Hassan also criticised the PSA charges against Malik, calling them a “serious question mark on the democracy of our country.”

Malik, who won the Doda seat in the 2024 Assembly elections by over 4,500 votes, was detained on Monday under the PSA for allegedly disturbing public order and was lodged in Kathua district jail.
