Adani Group to Build India’s Largest Battery Energy Storage System at Khavda
NEW DELHI: The Adani Group on Tuesday announced its foray into the battery energy storage sector with plans to establish a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat — set to be India’s largest and among the world’s biggest single-location storage projects.
According to the company’s statement, the project — comprising over 700 BESS containers — is scheduled for commissioning by March 2026. It will be part of the Khavda renewable energy complex, recognized as the world’s largest renewable energy plant.
Battery storage systems play a critical role in enhancing the reliability of renewable energy by storing power generated from sources such as solar and wind for use during non-generation hours. This technology reduces dependence on fossil fuels, cuts electricity costs, and ensures grid stability and consistent power supply.
Adani said the BESS project is designed to enhance grid reliability, manage peak load, reduce transmission congestion, and enable round-the-clock clean power delivery. The system will leverage advanced lithium-ion battery technology combined with energy management systems for optimized performance.
The project’s specifications include a power capacity of 1,126 MW and energy storage capacity of 3,530 MWh, meaning it can supply 1,126 MW of power continuously for about three hours.
“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group. “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reaffirming our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability.”
He added that the initiative would help deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy at scale.
The Group also revealed plans to expand its storage capacity to 15 GWh by FY27 and 50 GWh within five years, reflecting its long-term commitment to large-scale clean energy infrastructure.
“The project is in advanced stages of deployment at Khavda and will utilize cutting-edge lithium-ion technology integrated with advanced energy management systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability,” the company said. “It will support peak load management and energy shifting, playing a key role in decarbonising India’s power sector.”
With this strategic expansion, the Adani Group joins leading global players investing in large-scale energy storage solutions — marking a transformative milestone in India’s clean energy journey.
Headquartered in Ahmedabad, the Adani Group operates across energy, logistics, metals, and consumer sectors, and has pledged to align its growth strategy with India’s net-zero and sustainability goals.
