New Delhi, Dec 6: The government has announced immediate capping of airfares following widespread disruptions in IndiGo services, warning airlines against opportunistic pricing that burdens passengers. Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring affordability and preventing exploitation during the ongoing crisis in air travel.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, strict monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to track ticket pricing across major routes. Airlines have been directed to maintain transparency and adhere to regulated fare bands, with violations attracting penalties.
Authorities emphasized that the decision was taken after reports of sudden fare hikes on key sectors, particularly affecting travelers stranded due to cancellations and delays. The ministry reiterated that passenger welfare remains the top priority and assured that corrective measures will continue until normal operations are restored.
Industry representatives acknowledged the government’s intervention, noting that it will help stabilize the market and protect consumer interests. Travel associations also welcomed the move, saying it will prevent arbitrary pricing and restore confidence among passengers.
The government cautioned airlines that any attempt to exploit the situation through inflated fares will invite strict action. Officials added that coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is underway to ensure compliance and maintain fair practices across the aviation sector.
