Srinagar, Nov 27: Airtel’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Gopal Vittal, has cautioned customers that using their primary bank account for UPI payments increases the risk of digital fraud. He noted that linking the main savings account to payment apps exposes it to scams, even for small transactions.

Vittal highlighted the growing menace of digital scams, including fake parcel delivery calls, phishing links, and digital arrest frauds. He described these threats as “a part of our new normal” and urged customers to adopt safer practices.

To mitigate risks, Airtel has launched a “Safe Second Account” through Airtel Payments Bank. Customers can park smaller amounts in this account and use it for daily UPI transactions, thereby protecting their primary savings account.

Airtel has also deployed AI-backed spam alerts and fraud-link blockers to safeguard users. However, Vittal emphasized that cybercriminals are becoming increasingly inventive, making it essential for customers to remain vigilant.

The advisory reflects growing concerns in India’s digital payments ecosystem, where UPI transactions have surged and fraudsters continue to exploit vulnerabilities.
