New Delhi [India]: Following a cloudburst in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed four lives, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured that the Central government is closely monitoring the situation.
Shah confirmed that full government support has been extended, and rescue operations are underway with assistance from the local administration and NDRF teams.
In a post on X, Shah stated, “Spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kathua. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the local administration, and NDRF teams have also been rushed to the site. Assured every support from the Modi government. We stand firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K.”
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives caused by rain-triggered landslides across Kathua district. Describing the tragedy as “mind-numbing,” Sinha said he briefed Union Minister Shah on ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
He wrote on X, “Deeply anguished by the loss of lives in the devastating rain-triggered landslides in several areas of Kathua. The tragedy is mind-numbing. Briefed Hon’ble Union Home Minister Sh. Amit Shah Ji on rescue and relief operations by the army, NDRF, SDRF, police & administration.”
The cloudburst, which struck on the night between Saturday and Sunday, left four dead and caused extensive damage, including to a railway track, the national highway, and the local police station. Flash floods and a landslide in Jodh village have trapped six people and washed away several connecting roads.
Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Rajesh Sharma, confirmed that rescue teams are on-site and operations are ongoing in Jodh village.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh also stated that police, military, and civil administration teams are actively engaged in rescue efforts and monitoring the situation closely.
In an X post, he wrote, “Spoken to SSP Kathua Sh. Shobhit Saxena after receiving information about a cloudburst in the Janglote area. Four casualties reported. In addition, damage has occurred to the railway track and national highway, while Police Station Kathua has been affected.”
