New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation following a massive cloudburst in Kishtwar, assuring all possible assistance for affected residents.

The cloudburst struck the remote village of Chasoti, claiming at least 12 lives and causing extensive damage, officials said. Shah noted that the local administration is actively carrying out relief and rescue operations, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) swiftly deployed to the site.

“Spoke with the LG and Chief Minister of J&K regarding the cloudburst in Kishtwar district. Relief and rescue operations are underway, and NDRF teams have been promptly dispatched,” Shah wrote on X.

He added that the central government is closely monitoring the situation and stands firmly with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Assured of all possible assistance to those in need,” he said.

The disaster struck Chasoti—the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata temple—between 12 noon and 1 pm, when a large number of pilgrims were present for the Machail Mata yatra. The shrine is an 8.5 km trek from Chasoti.
