New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the Partition of 1947, while accusing the Congress party of dividing the nation and hurting the pride of Maa Bharati (Mother India).
Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Shah said the occasion is meant to express condolences and recall the suffering endured by millions during the Partition.
“On this day, the Congress party divided the nation, hurting the pride of Maa Bharati. The Partition brought violence, exploitation, and atrocities, displacing millions of people. I offer my heartfelt tributes to all those affected. The nation will never forget this chapter of history and the pain of Partition,” he wrote in a post on X in Hindi.
Since 2021, the Modi government has observed August 14 as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to honor those who lost their lives during the country’s division. At the time of the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the day commemorates the struggles and sacrifices of people, as the pain of Partition can never be forgotten. He noted that millions were displaced and many lost their lives due to the violence and hatred sparked by Partition.
The Partition of British India led to the creation of two independent nations: India and Pakistan. India is set to celebrate its Independence Day on Friday.
