Srinagar: A court in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, has acquitted a man accused of killing his pregnant wife, citing the prosecution’s failure to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Principal District and Sessions Judge Tahir Khurshid Raina cleared Bilal Ahmad Sofi of charges in connection with the death of his wife in the south Kashmir district.
The judgment, reserved on August 8, was pronounced on Monday. Sofi had faced charges under Section 302 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) for the alleged murder of Sumi Jan.
The complaint, lodged by the deceased’s father, claimed that Sofi assaulted his pregnant daughter on February 25, 2017, by kicking her in the abdomen and dragging her by her hair, leading to her death.
However, the court concluded that the prosecution failed to prove Sofi’s culpability beyond a reasonable doubt.
“Consequently, the accused is acquitted of the charges for which he stood trial in this court. He is also discharged from his personal and surety bonds. Seized property, if any, shall be destroyed after the period for appeal expires,” the judge ruled.
