NEW DELHI, : Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu has asked the Centre to bear the full expense of Rs 260 crore towards procurement of 6.5 lakh tonne of ‘totapuri’ mangoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) in the state in the current season

In a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Atchannaidu informed that the procurement of the mangoes is underway in Chittoor district at a support price of Rs 12 per kg. Out of this, traders/factories are paying Rs 8 per kg, and the rest Rs 4 per kg is borne 50:50 by the Centre and the state as per the MIS norms.

Totapuri mangoes are harvested between May and August and the peak arrival period is June-July. The production of the mangoes in Andhra Pradesh is estimated at 49.86 lakh tonne in 2025-26 season.

However, the state minister urged Chouhan “to bear 100 per cent of expenditure” as part of the price deficiency payment under the MIS considering the sharp fall in local prices.

He also sought permission to implement the procurement scheme till August 2025.

Prices of ‘totapuri’ mangoes have declined in the state to as low as Rs 4 per kg this year as against the production cost of Rs 17.50 per kg because of high production and accumulation of stocks with mango pulp factories.

Civil Aviation Minister K R Naidu was also present in the meeting.
