Apple to Notify 1 Million Users About Hypertension via Apple Watch Alerts

New Delhi: Tech giant Apple plans to alert one million people about hypertension — a high blood pressure condition affecting over 1.3 billion adults globally — through a new feature on the Apple Watch, CEO Tim Cook announced.

The hypertension notifications feature, available on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3, will alert users when consistent signs of high blood pressure are detected.

“With our latest Apple Watch lineup, we’re proud to introduce hypertension notifications developed using large-scale machine learning models. Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for heart attacks and strokes, and we expect to notify more than one million users of this life-threatening condition,” Cook said during Apple’s Q4 2025 earnings call on Thursday (US time).

He emphasized that AI and advanced machine learning underpin Apple’s health features, including heart rate monitoring, fall detection, and crash detection.

Often referred to as a “silent killer,” hypertension frequently goes undiagnosed due to its lack of symptoms. The new Apple Watch algorithm uses data from the optical heart sensor to analyse how a user’s blood vessels respond to heartbeats. Operating passively in the background, it reviews data over 30-day periods and sends alerts if persistent signs of hypertension are found.

Cook also highlighted the new sleep score feature, which helps users understand and improve sleep quality.

“We’re also excited about sleep score — a simple, intuitive way to help users better understand their sleep quality and discover ways to improve it. That’s something I’m sure we can all benefit from,” he added.

Apple reported $9 billion in revenue from its wearables, home, and accessories segment.

“We were thrilled to unlock new possibilities with our latest Apple Watch lineup — making the world’s most popular watch even better,” Cook said. “The Apple Watch Ultra 3 now offers the largest display ever, longer battery life, and emergency SOS via satellite. The Series 11 delivers the most comprehensive health features yet, while the SE 3 brings advanced capabilities at an incredible value.”
