JAMMU: In a remarkable 12-hour operation, Indian Army engineers have successfully laid a 110-foot Bailey bridge to reconnect the flood-hit Tawi bridge, restoring vehicular traffic on this crucial Jammu city link.

Heavy rains on August 26 had damaged the road near the fourth Tawi bridge as the river swelled, leaving vehicles stranded on the broken stretch.

“Engineers of the Tiger Division started work early this morning to reconnect the road with the Tawi bridge,” an army officer said.

He added that the eastern span of the bridge, severely damaged by the floods, was revived as engineers swiftly laid the Bailey bridge within 12 hours, overcoming washed-out approaches and limited workspace. Vehicular movement was restored despite the challenging conditions.

By evening, traffic resumed, reopening the route used daily by thousands of commuters.

The bridge had also sustained damage in the 2024 floods at the same spot but was subsequently repaired.
