New Delhi: As India marks the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the nation’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister — a series of events are being held across the country to honour the great freedom fighter, statesman, and architect of national unity.

Celebrated every year on October 31 as National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the day commemorates Sardar Patel’s pivotal role in uniting India’s princely states after Independence. Since 2014, the observance has been highlighted by the nationwide ‘Run for Unity’ initiative, drawing participation from citizens of all ages.

In the national capital, Delhi Police organised a ‘Run for Unity’ event on Friday, where around 200 school students took part in a 2-kilometre run. Actor Huma Qureshi, who attended the event, lauded the initiative and the enthusiasm of participants, saying, “It’s a wonderful effort by Delhi Police, and I’m thrilled to see so many schools come together for this. It truly reflects the spirit of unity.”

Meanwhile, at the Statue of Unity in Narmada, Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel on his 150th Jayanti. PM Modi also participated in the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade, led by women personnel under the command of IPS officer Simran Bhardwaj from the Gujarat cadre. The Prime Minister joined thousands in taking the National Unity Pledge.

President Droupadi Murmu also paid homage to the “Iron Man of India,” recalling his monumental contribution to nation-building. In a post on X, she wrote,

“On the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all citizens. A great patriot and visionary, he unified the country with his courage, determination, and leadership. His dedication continues to inspire us to build a strong and harmonious India.”

Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadia (Gujarat), Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a decisive role in integrating more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union, laying the foundation of a united and independent nation.

Across the country, tributes poured in for the ‘Iron Man of India’, whose vision and leadership remain a cornerstone of India’s unity and strength.
