Jammu: Authorities have ordered the disconnection of electricity and water supply to an alleged illegal Rohingya settlement in Jammu city following complaints from local residents.
Officials said the land, where dozens of makeshift shanties have been erected to house Rohingyas, belongs to a resident of Rajouri district. Acting on the complaints, the Tehsildar of Bahu, Jammu, directed the Power Development Department (PDD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to disconnect the utilities at the settlement near Nideesh Enclave in Channi Rama.
“In this connection, you are hereby requested to disconnect the electricity and water supply connections to the illegally occupied plots by a group of Rohingyas settled near Nideesh Enclave, Channi Rama, Jammu, and submit an action-taken report to this office,” the order stated.
The directive, issued on October 9, followed a complaint from the president of the Nideesh Enclave Residents’ Welfare Association, who sought the eviction of the Rohingyas citing law-and-order concerns. Locals alleged that frequent quarrels and disturbances by the group were disrupting peace in the neighbourhood.
“It has been observed that the Rohingyas often engage in loud quarrels and fights, causing inconvenience and disturbing public peace,” the complaint mentioned.
However, a senior PHE official clarified that the water connection has not been disconnected as it was officially sanctioned to the plot owner. “The connection is legal and registered in the name of the landowner from Rajouri. It is for the Tehsildar to act against the illegal occupants,” the official said.
A similar situation had arisen in December 2024, when the administration ordered the disconnection of power and water supply to Rohingya settlements and slum areas across Jammu.
