Srinagar: Police on Wednesday attached a three-storey building that housed the office of the banned Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Kashmir, an outfit founded in 2004 by hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, officials said.

A team from Budgam police placed a notice on the Hyderpora office, officially declaring the building attached.

“In a major move against secessionist and terrorist networks, Budgam Police have attached the head office of the banned organisation Tehreek-e-Hurriyat at Rehmatabad, Hyderpora, under Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA),” the officials stated.

The attached property includes a three-storey building on a 5,700-square-foot plot, previously used as the outfit’s office. Officials said the action is linked to an FIR registered last year at Budgam police station under the UAPA.

“Acting on gathered evidence and with approval from the competent authority, the property was attached according to legal provisions. This marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation against unlawful activities and underscores Budgam police’s commitment to neutralising threats to national security and maintaining regional peace,” they added.

Geelani established Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Kashmir after splitting from Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir in 2002, following disagreements over the latter’s silence on election participation by Hurriyat Conference affiliate People’s Conference. This division led to a vertical split in the Hurriyat Conference, prompting Geelani to launch his own parallel faction in 2004.
