Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government remains “firm” in its commitment to hold general elections in February 2026, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Wednesday, according to media reports.

“The government is moving forward with all preparations for the election. The polls will be held in February, and the government’s position on this is unwavering,” Nazrul told state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) after a meeting at the Cabinet Division.

His remarks come amid speculation following statements by National Citizen Party leaders, who argued that elections cannot be held in February without key reforms and the completion of trials initiated by the interim government.

Responding, Nazrul said such political comments are part of Bangladesh’s tradition. “These statements are nothing new. They should be viewed as part of the political process. Ultimately, the responsibility to conduct polls lies with the government, not political parties,” he added.

Nazrul stressed that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is a “globally respected figure” and there is no question of departing from his commitment. “On behalf of the government, we say in unequivocal terms that the election will be held in February,” he said.

Earlier this month, Yunus confirmed the polls would be held in February, with the Election Commission later announcing they would take place in the first week of the month.

These will mark Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections, with the Election Commission expected to release a detailed roadmap within this week.
