Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday announced that the country’s next parliamentary elections will be held in February 2026.
In a televised address to the nation marking the first anniversary of the student-led “July Uprising” that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Yunus said the interim government would formally request the Election Commission to conduct the polls ahead of the holy month of Ramzan.
“On behalf of the interim government, I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting that the national election be held in February 2026, before the upcoming Ramzan,” Yunus said.
Ramzan is expected to begin on February 17 or 18 next year. The elections were previously scheduled for the first half of April.
