Sevilla delivered a stunning 4-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday, ending the champions’ unbeaten start in LaLiga and denying them a chance to reclaim the top spot.

It was Sevilla’s first league victory over Barcelona since 2015, temporarily lifting them to fourth place with 13 points from eight matches. Barcelona remained second with 19 points, two behind leaders Real Madrid.

“It’s one of the happiest days of my life. We deserved to win from start to finish,” said Jose Angel Carmona, who scored Sevilla’s third goal.

Barcelona started sluggishly, failing to register a shot on target in the first 30 minutes, while Sevilla probed early, trying to release Alexis Sanchez with long balls.

Sevilla opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Isaac Romero went down after a challenge with Ronald Araujo near Barcelona’s six-yard box. After reviewing the incident on VAR, the referee awarded a penalty, which Sanchez converted, sending former Arsenal teammate Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way.

Szczesny denied Sevilla a second goal in the 27th minute, blocking Romero’s close-range attempt. But Romero doubled the lead 10 minutes later, finishing a Ruben Vargas cross after the winger raced past Barcelona’s high defensive line.

Barcelona pulled one back late in first-half stoppage time when Marcus Rashford hammered Pedri’s lobbed pass into the net from a tight angle with his left foot.

Lewandowski misses penalty

The visitors pushed hard in the second half and had a chance to equalize when Adnan Januzaj fouled Alejandro Balde in the box, but Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in the 76th minute went wide.

Sevilla sealed the victory in the 90th minute as Carmona shot through a defender’s legs to make it 3-1. Second-half substitute Akor Adams added a fourth five minutes into added time, converting Chidera Ejuke’s pass.

“We lacked intensity, we couldn’t get the ball out of our half, we didn’t know what to do with it… we were never at our best,” admitted Barcelona midfielder Pedri. “We need to improve a lot to start winning games again after the break.”

Sevilla, who have now won two consecutive matches, will resume their league campaign against Mallorca on October 18, the same day Barcelona host Girona.
