Baramulla, Dec 02: A choked drain along the Kanispora stretch of the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway has turned the busy road into an accident-prone zone, raising serious safety concerns among commuters.
Local residents said the drain has remained blocked for weeks, causing waterlogging and slippery conditions on the highway. Drivers have reported frequent skidding incidents, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
Mohammad Ashraf, a shopkeeper from Kanispora, said that several minor accidents have already occurred due to the stagnant water. “Vehicles lose control when they pass through the waterlogged stretch. Authorities must act before a major tragedy happens,” he added.
Community representative Abdul Rashid Dar noted that repeated appeals to the Roads and Buildings Department and the Municipal Council Baramulla have gone unanswered. “We have approached officials several times, but the drain remains blocked. This negligence is putting lives at risk,” he said.
Executive Engineer R&B Baramulla, Ghulam Nabi, acknowledged the issue and said that a team has been deputed to clear the drain. He assured that remedial measures will be taken immediately to restore safe passage along the highway.
Residents urged the administration to prioritize the repair and maintenance of the drainage system, stressing that the Kanispora highway stretch is a vital link for thousands of commuters daily.
