Rajouri: A body was recovered from the Anas River near Kotranka on Monday, prompting an investigation by local police and emergency teams. The discovery was made by residents who alerted authorities after spotting the body floating downstream, officials said.

Police and rescue personnel reached the scene and retrieved the body, which was taken to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination and formal identification. Senior police officials said preliminary checks did not immediately reveal the identity of the deceased, and efforts are under way to establish who the person was and the circumstances leading to death.

An initial inspection by investigators found no obvious signs of injury at the site, but officials cautioned that the cause of death can only be determined after forensic analysis. “We have registered a case and launched an inquiry,” a police spokesperson said. “The post-mortem will provide clarity on whether this was an accident, natural death, or the result of foul play.”

Local authorities have begun door-to-door enquiries and are reviewing missing-person reports from surrounding areas. They have also appealed to anyone with information about recent disappearances or suspicious activity near the Anas River to come forward and assist the investigation.

The district administration said it is coordinating with police and hospital staff to expedite identification and to ensure the family is informed promptly once the deceased is identified. Officials urged residents to avoid the riverbanks until the inquiry is complete and reminded the public to report any relevant information to the Kotranka police station.
