Jammu: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has swiftly restored the Gharkhal–Pragwal road, the only vital link to the strategically significant sector in the Akhnoor area, following major disruptions caused by heavy rains, the Army said on Sunday.
Torrential downpours last week had completely washed away a crucial stretch of the road, halting all civilian and military movement. The blockade severely affected local residents, disrupted the supply of essential goods, and halted Army convoys to forward-deployed units, a defence spokesperson said.
In response to urgent requests from the civil administration and the Army, the BRO’s 57 Road Construction Company (RCC), led by Lt Col Preetam, immediately mobilized personnel and equipment. Braving the dangerous conditions of the swelling Chenab River, which had carved a new stream, the team worked tirelessly to repair the damaged section.
Despite the extreme challenges, BRO personnel operated round-the-clock, successfully restoring connectivity. Vehicle movement has resumed, providing much-needed relief to residents and ensuring operational readiness for the defence forces.
Local communities expressed deep gratitude for the BRO’s efforts. “This restoration underscores the BRO’s critical role in maintaining connectivity, security, and support across India’s most challenging terrains,” the spokesperson added.
