New Delhi: The government on Wednesday approved a 6.59 per cent hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat, raising it to Rs 2,585 per quintal for the 2026-27 marketing year.
The decision was cleared during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For comparison, the MSP of wheat for the ongoing 2025-26 marketing year was Rs 2,425 per quintal.
Wheat, the key rabi (winter) crop, is sown from late October and harvested from March onwards. Other major rabi crops include jowar, barley, gram, and lentil.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The Cabinet has approved MSP for six rabi crops for the 2026-27 marketing year. Wheat MSP has been fixed at Rs 2,585 per quintal.” He added that the 2026-27 wheat marketing season will begin in April, though procurement usually peaks by June.
The revised MSPs have been determined on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).
Meanwhile, the government has set a record wheat production target of 119 million tonnes for the 2025-26 crop year (July–June), higher than the 117.5 million tonnes estimated output for 2024-25.
