New Delhi: The Centre has withdrawn the Z-category CRPF security cover granted to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, just days after she was accorded the protection following an attack on her, official sources said on Monday. Her security responsibility has now been handed back to the Delhi Police.

Gupta, 51, was assaulted on August 20 during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme at her Civil Lines camp office. Her office described the incident as part of a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.”

The next day, the Union Home Ministry directed the CRPF’s VIP security wing to provide her Z-category cover. However, the decision was later reversed, and the Centre issued orders to withdraw the CRPF protection, sources added.

So far, Delhi Police have arrested two people in connection with the attack, including the prime accused, 41-year-old Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimji, an auto-rickshaw driver from Rajkot, Gujarat.
