Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo reviews Homestay Policy implementation; calls for stronger digital outreach and streamlined promotion
JAMMU: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo today chaired a high-level meeting to review the implementation of the Tourism Department’s Homestay Policy, aimed at promoting community-based tourism and expanding accommodation capacity across Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Tourism) Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma, Principal Secretary (Finance) Santosh D. Vaidya, representatives from J&K Bank, and senior officers of the Tourism Department.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of leveraging digital platforms to enhance the visibility and reach of homestays across J&K. He directed the Department to strengthen its social media presence and develop a dedicated online portal offering real-time bookings, detailed information on facilities, and options for public reviews and ratings.
Highlighting the need for financial support to homestay entrepreneurs, Dulloo urged J&K Bank to design an exclusive loan product for homestay owners, similar to housing loans, with competitive interest rates.
He also instructed the Tourism Department to revisit and align the existing guidelines with the Government of India’s Homestay Policy, incorporating a transparent grading system for registered units.
Providing an update, Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma informed that around 2,500 homestays with over 18,500 rooms have been registered so far. He added that the Department is introducing simplified registration processes, user-friendly guidelines, and enhanced marketing initiatives to promote homestays as a vital part of the tourism experience in J&K.
Principal Secretary Santosh D. Vaidya suggested integrating QR-based payments and visual content features such as photos and videos on the booking portal to offer a seamless user experience. He also stressed the need for streamlined documentation, robust verification systems, and a transparent digital framework for effective policy implementation.
Appreciating the Department’s efforts, the Chief Secretary called for time-bound execution of the proposed measures. He underscored that promoting homestays will not only diversify J&K’s accommodation options but also empower local communities, generate employment, and boost rural tourism across the Union Territory.
