SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo today chaired a high-level meeting with Administrative Secretaries to review the implementation of recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms and ensure that the benefits of reduced tax rates reach consumers effectively.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary, Finance; Commissioner Secretary, FCS&CA; Directors of FCS&CA, Kashmir and Jammu; the Controller of Legal Metrology; and other concerned officers.

During the discussion, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need for strict enforcement to prevent unjustified pricing. He directed the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) to set up special market-checking teams to monitor retail and wholesale markets, ensuring that commodity prices reflect the recent GST rate reductions announced by the Central Government.

Commissioner Secretary FCS&CA, Saurabh Bhagat, informed the meeting that several companies have already revised their product prices in line with the new tax structure, with 169 companies submitting notifications of these changes to the Legal Metrology Department.

The Chief Secretary highlighted that the reforms, effective from September 22, 2025, must provide tangible relief to consumers in the coming days. He stressed that the LMD would intensify inspections and take strict action against any violations.

He underlined that the primary goal of these reforms is consumer welfare, and it is essential that the GST reduction translates into lower market prices, allowing people to feel the real benefit.

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring transparency in the market.
