Islamabad: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday met Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir and discussed regional security, counter-terrorism, and issues of mutual interest.
Wang, who arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday for the 6th round of the Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, also held separate meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari. During these meetings, he reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Pakistan to advance regional peace, development, and stability.
According to a statement by the Pakistan Army, China expressed its “steadfast support” for Pakistan’s sovereignty and development as both sides pledged to further strengthen their “all-weather strategic partnership.” Discussions between Wang and Gen Munir focused on regional security, counter-terrorism, and closer cooperation at regional and international forums. Munir thanked China for its consistent support, with both sides reaffirming their resolve to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
Last month, Gen Munir visited China, where he met Vice President Han Zheng, Wang Yi, and senior military officials, though unlike his predecessor Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, he did not meet President Xi Jinping.
On Thursday, Wang held strategic consultations with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral ties including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) 2.0, trade and economic relations, multilateral cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Before arriving in Islamabad, Wang visited Kabul for a trilateral meeting with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts. The three countries agreed to expand cooperation in various fields, including extending CPEC to Afghanistan.
This marks Wang’s second visit to Pakistan in three years and follows a series of recent high-level exchanges between the two countries. Earlier this week, he was in New Delhi, where he met Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval for the 24th round of boundary talks.
