Leh: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday in Leh, two days after violent protests by supporters of the statehood movement and the demand for the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution left four people dead and around 90 injured, officials said.

Wangchuk was taken into custody at 2:30 pm by a police team led by Ladakh DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, according to officials.

The exact charges against Wangchuk have not been disclosed.

The Home Ministry has accused Wangchuk, a senior member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), of provoking the violence. LAB, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), has been leading the agitation in support of these demands for over five years.

Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike backing the demands, denied the allegations. He condemned the violence and ended his fortnight-long fast following Wednesday’s unrest.
