Srinagar: In the wake of rising water levels in the Jhelum River, Union Territory Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that residents affected by a breach in the river bund have been safely evacuated on Thursday.

Taking to X, Abdullah stated that a breach occurred in the Jhelum bund near Zoonipora village in Budgam, leading to flooding in nearby areas. Villages affected include Shalina, Rakh Shalina, and Baghi Shakirshah, whose residents were moved to designated rescue centres and safer locations during the night.

Abdullah also warned of possible inundation in Seerbagh and Summerbugh villages, adding that rescue teams are actively relocating residents to safety. He urged people in these areas to remain in safer locations until water levels recede.

Six rescue centres have been set up in affected areas, namely: GHS Wagoora, GHSS Khandah, Sheikh-ul-Alam HS Wagoora, GHSS BK Pora, Islamic Public HS Kralpora, and Dar-ul-Fatah Dangerpora.

In the Jammu region, the gates of Salal Dam in Reasi were opened due to rising water levels in the Chenab River following heavy rainfall. Bhaderwah in Doda district has been experiencing continuous heavy rain for three days, while flash flood-like conditions have been reported across multiple districts. In Rajouri, persistent downpours have forced authorities to remain on high alert.

The rise in Chenab River levels has led to water entering many homes. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places receiving extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) across Jammu and Kashmir until 8:30 AM on September 3.
