Jammu: With hopes of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir dashed during the Monsoon Session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said the struggle for the cause begins anew.

“Leave it now, the hope has gone, the water has crossed over. We will start our process from here. We had hoped this would not be necessary, that the promises made to us would be honored. Action will be taken based on those promises,” Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

“Well, if we need to struggle a bit, work a little harder… that is exactly what we will do,” said the National Conference leader.

Abdullah was attending the 56th Raising Day of Sainik School in Nagrota, where he inaugurated the Triveni Girls Hostel.

He also accused the Centre of using the three proposed bills concerning the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers to selectively target politicians.

“So far, in all cases registered and arrests made, only opposition members have been targeted. If the intention is truly to curb corruption, then what impact has the government’s work had since 2014?” he asked.

“No law is inherently bad – it is the misuse of a law that makes it wrong,” he added.

Abdullah cautioned his BJP colleagues, saying, “They will not remain in power forever. The very laws they use against others today could be used against their own people tomorrow. Playing with the law will not benefit the country.”

The Chief Minister said the matter is now before the parliamentary committee, and he will await its outcome.

Regarding the recent dismissal of two government employees over alleged terror links, Abdullah said, “This is something you will have to ask the Raj Bhavan about – we have no role in it.”

On questions about cabinet deliberations and relief measures for those affected by the cloudburst, he said, “For now, we are providing as much relief as possible. After assessment, if additional support is needed, we will provide that as well.”
