Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed concern that the Waqf Amendment Act targets people of a particular religion.
The Chief Minister welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to put certain provisions of the Act on hold, while refusing to stay the entire law, and hoped that other problematic sections would also be addressed.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said, “We have consistently maintained that this bill targets people of one religion. It is encouraging that the Supreme Court has recognized this. It would be helpful if the other objectionable parts of this Act are also brought to light.”
Earlier, the Supreme Court refused to stay the entire Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 but temporarily suspended specific provisions pending final adjudication of petitions challenging the Act’s constitutional validity. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih noted that some sections of the amended Act require safeguards.
