Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said the Union Territory has suffered extensive losses due to recent floods and expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce a relief package during his reported upcoming visit.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah highlighted the scale of the destruction, particularly affecting the Kishtwar and Katra yatras.

“The loss has been immense—lives have been lost, especially during the Kishtwar and Katra yatras. Property has also been severely affected. Around 330 bridges have been washed away, over 1,500 km of roads destroyed, many government buildings damaged, and crops ruined. Even our dry fruits have been destroyed,” Abdullah said.

He added that the state government expects substantial support from the Centre to aid in reconstruction efforts.

“Given the scale of the devastation, we hope our losses will be thoroughly assessed and an adequate relief package announced. I will present these points to the Prime Minister and hope that a meaningful package is provided for the people of J&K,” the Chief Minister said.

Earlier, on Wednesday, BJP leader Ravinder Raina expressed concern over the heavy losses suffered by apple growers in Kashmir following torrential rains, floods, and landslides that disrupted transport on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
