Kulgam: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said his government is making consistent efforts to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, expressing hope that the long-pending demand would soon be fulfilled. He, however, said the delay in granting statehood is known only to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to reporters in Kulgam, Omar said that restoring statehood was a promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and should have been fulfilled long ago. “We had expected the Centre to restore statehood within a year. We don’t know what’s causing the delay — only the BJP can answer that. But our struggle for it will continue,” he said.
On the revival of the bi-annual Darbar Move practice, Omar said his government remains committed to the promises made in its manifesto. “I made it clear from day one that whatever promises we made will be fulfilled. The Darbar Move was one such commitment, and since 2021, it has been restored,” he said.
Regarding reservation matters, the Chief Minister said a cabinet sub-committee headed by Sakeena Itoo has completed its work. “The report has been finalized and approved. A cabinet memo is being prepared for circulation and will soon be sent to the Lieutenant Governor for approval,” he informed.
On compensation for farmers affected by crop losses, Omar said the government is actively pursuing a relief package. “Assessments have been completed wherever agricultural or horticultural crops were damaged. Talks with the Centre are underway for a relief package similar to those extended to other states. Jammu and Kashmir also deserves such support,” he added.
Responding to a question on the revocation of FIRs registered during COVID-19 restrictions, Omar said, “Law and order is not under the elected government’s control right now. Once we regain those powers, we will address those issues as well.”
Meanwhile, in a post on X, the Office of the Chief Minister said Omar Abdullah visited stalls set up by various departments in Kulgam.
“The Chief Minister took a round of stalls showcasing government schemes, public welfare initiatives, and achievements under flagship programmes. He interacted with officials and beneficiaries, appreciating their efforts toward citizen-centric governance and effective service delivery,” the post said.
