Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday emphasized that peace is the foundation for development, and essential for the growth of tourism and sports in Jammu and Kashmir.
“For development, for tourism or sports, we need peace. If we talk about day and night matches, but the situation is not conducive, who will come to play in the evening?” Abdullah told reporters during the launch of the Real Kashmir Football Club’s jersey here.
“Peace underpins everything. The message behind today’s event and the jersey itself is one of peace,” he added.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had earlier said that peace is a prerequisite for development in Jammu and Kashmir, while also noting that some remnants of terrorism remain in the Union Territory.
Abdullah stressed that establishing peace is not solely his government’s responsibility, stating, “Those who are responsible should fulfil their duty. Yet, my government is often targeted for everything that happens here, even though law and order is not under our domain.”
Highlighting his government’s focus on sports, the Chief Minister said, “There is hardly an assembly segment without some sports infrastructure being developed. These projects are based on the interests of local youth, aiming to provide them opportunities to utilize the facilities fully.”
Abdullah also mentioned ongoing and upcoming sporting events. “Tournaments and races are being held at district and sub-district levels. The second edition of the Kashmir Marathon is scheduled for November 2. I invite athletes from across the country, especially those interested in the half-marathon, to join us in Srinagar.”
Regarding the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, affected by landslides due to heavy rains, Abdullah said, “We haven’t been able to black-top the 300-metre stretch that was washed away. Repairs will follow soon, and vehicles will then move freely. Currently, no vehicles are stranded.”
Earlier, at the TRC Ground, Abdullah unveiled the special edition “Peace Jersey” of Real Kashmir FC, created in collaboration with iconic Danish sportswear brand Hummel. The initiative highlights the role of sports in promoting peace, unity, and community spirit across Jammu and Kashmir.
The jersey, inspired by the historic Hari Parbat Fort—a symbol of communal harmony housing a shrine, temple, and gurdwara—features a sky-blue base representing peace and celebrates Kashmir’s cultural heritage and aspirations.
“Real Kashmir FC shows how football can inspire and unite communities. Sports serve as a vital bridge for peace,” Abdullah concluded.
