Jammu: Authorities in Jammu on Saturday announced new regulations for electric vehicles, introducing designated zones to streamline traffic movement and enhance road safety, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rakesh Minhas issued the order following a meeting of the District Road Traffic Authority (DRTA), attended by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh, SSP Traffic Farooq Qaiser, Regional Transport Officer Jasmeet Singh, and representatives of various transport unions.

The new system will take effect from October 23 for an initial period of three months. According to officials, the initiative aims to regulate the operation of e-rickshaws, e-autos, and e-carts across the district, ensuring smoother traffic flow and better discipline on city roads.

Under the new arrangement, e-vehicles will operate within specific colour-coded zones for easy identification:

Zone 1 (South Jammu): Pink plate

Zone 2 (North Jammu): Blue plate

Zone 3 (Akhnoor): Yellow plate

Zone 4 (RS Pura): Red plate

Zone 5 (Marh): Green plate

Zone 6 (Nagrota): Black plate

E-vehicles will not be allowed to ply on flyovers, national highways, or state highways within district limits. Additionally, vehicles registered outside Jammu are barred from operating in the district.

Movement between zones is restricted, except at seven designated crossings:

Amphalla Hospital (towards District Jail)

Bakshi Nagar (towards old Shakuntala Theatre)

KC Theatre (backside, towards Shalamar Children Hospital)

Hotel Asia (towards District Police Line)

Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground (towards Shiksha Niketan School)

Marble Market (towards Greater Kailash)

Kunjwani (towards Greater Jammu)

DC Minhas urged all e-vehicle operators and stakeholders to cooperate for safer and more efficient traffic management. He added that the order would be reviewed after three months based on compliance levels and stakeholder feedback.
