Srinagar: Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain on Monday accused the BJP of securing victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections through “vote chori” (vote theft), asserting that the party cannot win polls on the basis of its performance.
“They (BJP) cannot win elections in the name of development, their programmes, or slogans. Their only tactics are to either stir up Hindu-Muslim divisions or misuse government agencies,” Hussain, who also serves as Congress general secretary in charge of Jammu and Kashmir, told reporters at a press conference.
He said the Congress’ “Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod” campaign seeks to spread awareness among voters about protecting their democratic rights.
Hussain alleged that “vote chori” was not limited to 2024. “They must have done it in earlier elections too, but in 2024 it became clear. Modi became Prime Minister by indulging in ‘vote chori’. It is very evident,” he claimed.
The Rajya Sabha MP said the Congress is highlighting the issue to remind citizens that the right to vote is their most fundamental democratic right, which he alleged is now under assault.
Referring to the party’s “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” campaign, Hussain reiterated Congress’ demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. “Our struggle for statehood will continue, and we will take this message to every household,” he said.
On the recent closure of the Srinagar–Jammu national highway, Hussain remarked that the losses could have been reduced if J&K had the powers of a full-fledged state.
He also demanded adequate relief for those affected by the recent floods. “The announced compensation of ₹209 crore is a cruel joke with the people of J&K. Losses must be properly assessed, and comprehensive compensation should be provided,” he said.
