Patna: As the Congress convenes its working committee meeting here, AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday recalled the party’s historic Ramgarh session of 1940, where a resolution endorsing the creation of a Constituent Assembly to draft a Constitution was passed, while also taking a dig at the BJP-RSS.
Highlighting the significance of the Extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Patna, Ramesh noted that it was during the Ramgarh session in mid-March 1940 that the CWC passed its landmark resolution, formally committing the Indian National Congress to the formation of a Constituent Assembly tasked with framing and adopting a Constitution for a free and independent India.
“The rest, as they say, is history—including the staunch opposition of the organisation, now celebrating its centenary, to the Constitution that was adopted on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950,” he remarked, in an apparent reference to the RSS.
Ramesh added that at the time of the 1940 Ramgarh session, a concise book titled Constituent Assembly and Our Demand had been published. “It was authored by Jai Gopal Narang and included a foreword by the person who had been the strongest advocate for such a Constituent Assembly for nearly a decade,” he said, sharing a screenshot of Jawaharlal Nehru’s foreword.
The Congress leadership is expected to discuss strategies for the upcoming Bihar assembly polls and intensify its attack on the BJP over alleged “vote chori.”
The extended CWC meeting includes permanent and special invitees, party chief ministers, Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders.
