BCCI’s Devajit Saikia Calls Molestation of Australian Cricketers ‘Deeply Regrettable and Isolated Incident’

Mumbai: BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Saturday issued an official statement condemning the molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore, describing it as “a deeply regrettable and isolated incident.”

The two unnamed players were allegedly harassed by a motorcyclist while walking from their hotel to a nearby café ahead of their Women’s ODI World Cup match. The incident has drawn widespread outrage across the country, with the BCCI, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, and former players denouncing the act.

“This is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident. India has always been known for its warmth, hospitality, and care towards all guests. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts. We appreciate the swift and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused. The law will take its due course to ensure justice is served,” Saikia said in his statement.

He added that the BCCI will review and strengthen its existing safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Following the incident, the Australian team has been provided with additional security. Despite the distressing event, the team went on to register a commanding seven-wicket victory over South Africa at the Holkar Stadium, led by Alana King’s remarkable bowling spell of 7 for 18.

Speaking to IANS earlier, Saikia expressed deep regret over the matter, calling it “an unfortunate event that should not have happened with any guest in the country.” He also lauded the prompt action by the police in arresting the culprit.

“We are happy that the police acted swiftly. The accused has been nabbed, and we trust the law will take its course. Though teams already have strong security arrangements, we will further enhance them to ensure such incidents do not recur,” he said.

The accused, identified as Aqeel Khan, was arrested on Thursday morning. According to police, the two cricketers were walking along Khajrana Road when the man followed them on a motorcycle, inappropriately touched one of them, and fled. The players immediately informed their team security officer, who coordinated with local authorities to respond quickly.

Police reviewed CCTV footage, hotel records, and statements from security staff, which led to Khan’s arrest.

The incident has cast a shadow over an otherwise competitive Women’s World Cup, sparking renewed discussions about the safety of women athletes in India.
