New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) on Friday removed the names of Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad, Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather, Dr. Muzamil Shakeel, and Dr. Shaheen Saeed from the National Medical Register after they were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the recent Delhi blast.
With their removal, the doctors are barred from practicing medicine or holding any medical appointment until further orders.
The action follows ongoing investigations into the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives on November 10 and the powerful car blast near the Red Fort that killed 13 people. Eight individuals, including several doctors, have been arrested, while many others have been detained.
In a public notice, the NMC detailed the charges filed against the doctors and stated that Dr. Muzaffar Ahmad, Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather, and Dr. Muzamil Shakeel—registered with the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council—were found involved in the case based on evidence gathered by investigating agencies. Their conduct was deemed “inconsistent with the standards of ethical propriety, integrity and public trust” required under the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.
The Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council has already cancelled the registrations of Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Rather, Dr. Shakeel, and Dr. Saeed and ordered their immediate removal from its register. The NMC subsequently directed that their names be struck off from the Indian Medical Register/National Medical Register as well.
On November 10, police reported seizing 360 kg of ammonium nitrate from a flat rented by Dr. Muzamil at Al Falah University in Faridabad, where he worked. Later, J&K Police announced the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives from the area and said a “white-collar” terror module had been busted. Dr. Muzamil has since been arrested.
Police are also searching for Dr. Muzaffar, associated with the same university. Originally from Qazigund, he left India in August and is believed to be in Afghanistan. An Interpol Red Corner Notice has been requested against him.
Investigators say Dr. Shaheen, a doctor from Lucknow, was aware of the conspiracy being orchestrated by the three other doctors, including details of logistics allegedly planned ahead of the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on December 6.
Dr. Adeel Rather, brother of Dr. Muzaffar, was arrested on November 7 from Saharanpur. An AK-56 rifle and ammunition were recovered from his locker at Anantnag hospital.
