New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a 59-year-old man for his alleged role in espionage activities, including links with a foreign-based nuclear scientist and involvement in a fake passport racket operating from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, an official said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Adil Hussaini, who also went by the names Syed Adil Hussain, Nasimuddin, and Syed Adil Hussaini, was apprehended from Seemapuri in Delhi two days ago, the official added.
According to police sources, Adil had been in contact with a nuclear scientist based abroad and had travelled to several countries, including Pakistan. He allegedly obtained three identity cards from a sensitive installation using forged documents.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah stated that Adil hails from Tata Nagar, Jamshedpur.
“Adil and his brother, Akhtar Hussaini, are suspected of supplying sensitive information to foreign entities and acquiring multiple Indian passports through forged documents,” Kushwah said.
Police believe the entire network was being run from Jamshedpur, where fake identity cards and passports were produced using counterfeit paperwork.
During a search operation, officers recovered one original and two forged passports from Adil’s possession. He was arrested on October 26 under sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 318 (cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), and 340 (forged document or electronic record used as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A senior police official revealed that Mumbai Police had earlier arrested Adil’s brother Akhtar, who had travelled to several Gulf nations and was also involved in obtaining the fake identity cards.
Investigators are now verifying how many individuals were issued forged passports through the racket.
Adil was presented before a court, which remanded him to seven days of police custody for further interrogation, Kushwah confirmed.
