JAMMU, Dec 4: Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat today lauded the role of Village Defence Groups (VDGs) in safeguarding communities along sensitive areas, describing their contribution as vital to maintaining peace and security. He emphasised that the dedication and courage displayed by VDG members has strengthened grassroots vigilance and enhanced public confidence in security measures.

Addressing a gathering of VDG members, the DGP said that exceptional individuals from these groups may be considered for induction into the regular police force. “The commitment shown by VDGs in protecting their villages and supporting security operations is commendable. Those who demonstrate outstanding service and discipline could be absorbed into the regular force,” Prabhat stated.

He highlighted that the initiative reflects the government’s resolve to recognise and reward community participation in security efforts. The DGP noted that VDGs have played a crucial role in assisting police and other agencies in monitoring border areas, reporting suspicious activity, and ensuring the safety of residents.

Officials explained that the proposal to induct exceptional VDG members into the regular force is aimed at strengthening local security networks while providing career opportunities to those who have consistently served with distinction. The move is expected to further integrate community-based defence mechanisms with formal policing structures.

DGP Prabhat reiterated that the police remain committed to supporting VDGs through training, resources, and coordination. He urged members to continue their vigilant role and assured that their efforts will be duly recognised at institutional levels.

The announcement has been welcomed by VDG members and local residents, who see it as a significant step towards empowering communities and reinforcing the bond between citizens and security forces.
