Div Com directs decongestion measures in Jammu City ahead of festival season
JAMMU: Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, today directed enforcement agencies to ensure systematic regulation of traffic on National Highways and implement effective measures to decongest Jammu city roads in view of the ongoing festival season. He emphasized the need for smooth vehicular movement and hassle-free commuting for the public.
The Divisional Commissioner issued these directions while chairing a meeting of Deputy Commissioners, Traffic Officers, representatives of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and other concerned departments to review traffic management in Jammu city and vehicular movement along major highways.
At the outset, Ramesh Kumar reviewed the prevailing traffic scenario in Jammu city as well as on key routes including Lakhanpur–Banihal NH, Jammu–Poonch Road, Mughal Road, and Doda–Kishtwar Road. Expressing concern over frequent traffic jams causing public inconvenience, he instructed the authorities to take prompt and effective measures, particularly during peak hours and in busy market areas.
The Div Com directed district administrations and the Traffic Department to intensify patrolling and deploy additional personnel to ensure smooth traffic flow during the festival rush. He also instructed officials to facilitate the movement of fruit-laden trucks, essential supplies, and the seasonal migration of nomads.
“Ensure seamless movement of supplies and fruit-laden trucks at all transit points to avoid unnecessary halts and delays,” he said, further stressing the need for a coordinated movement plan for nomads and their livestock to prevent congestion on highways.
Reviewing upcoming infrastructure projects, the Div Com directed executing agencies to expedite formalities for the construction of four proposed bridges and to fast-track blacktopping and road renovation works, especially in congestion-prone areas.
He laid special emphasis on efficient traffic management and enforcement, directing officers to identify critical congestion zones and implement timely remedial measures. Strict action was also called for against illegal parking, roadside encroachments, and violations of one-way traffic norms.
Ramesh Kumar urged public cooperation, appealing to commuters and transporters to adhere to traffic advisories and support the administration in maintaining order on the roads.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners, the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), and officers from NHAI, BRO, PWD, and other line departments. The Div Com directed all departments to maintain close coordination and submit regular progress reports for continuous monitoring.
