Project to Benefit 15,000 Srinagar Households Set for Commissioning on October 31: Div Com Anshul Garg

SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Thursday conducted an on-site inspection of the 60 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Noorbagh, Srinagar, to review its operational readiness ahead of commissioning scheduled for October 31.

The inspection followed the completion of the Comprehensive Sewerage Scheme for Greater Srinagar, launched under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM). Initially sanctioned at ₹143 crore, the project cost was later revised to ₹157 crore.

Highlighting the project’s significance, the Div Com said it would play a crucial role in enhancing urban sanitation, protecting the environment, and improving public health standards across the city.

Garg informed that the project was executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) under the supervision of the Housing and Urban Development Department.

“We have started the trial run of the 60 MLD STP after NBCC and UEED intensified their efforts to complete this long-pending project. Once commissioned, it will immediately benefit around 15,000 households in Srinagar,” he said.

Acknowledging the growing population and increasing demand, Garg announced that the administration is already planning a second phase of the project with a 70 MLD capacity to meet future needs in line with the city’s expansion.

He directed the Superintending Engineer, UEED, to begin the process of obtaining a dedicated power supply line to ensure uninterrupted operation of the plant. He also instructed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for utility shifting, tertiary treatment, automated quality monitoring, and other infrastructural upgrades be finalized within one week for submission to the Administrative Department.

During an interaction with local residents, the Div Com heard their grievances regarding sewerage and stormwater issues and assured timely redressal.

Addressing media queries on the power scenario in the Valley, Garg emphasized that ensuring regular power supply remains a top administrative priority.

“Regular reviews are being held at both the UT and divisional levels. The department is currently conducting pruning of trees, maintenance work, and augmentation of transformer buffer stock to ensure winter preparedness. The power scenario this winter is expected to be better than in previous years,” he said.

The Div Com was accompanied by the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, and officers from the Revenue Department and UEED during the visit.
