Div Com Kashmir Oversees Flood Relief Operations, Urges Public to Avoid Low-Lying Areas
SRINAGAR: Following breaches in the embankments of the River Jhelum at Zonipora and Shalina in Budgam, which caused flooding in several low-lying areas of Srinagar and Budgam districts, Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg, visited the affected regions to supervise relief and rescue operations.
Accompanied by IGP Kashmir and the Deputy Commissioners of Srinagar and Budgam, the Div Com toured Lasjan and Nowgam to assess the situation and ensure that coordinated efforts were in place to protect residents.
Addressing the situation, Div Com Garg stated, “Early this morning, breaches occurred in the Jhelum embankments at Zonipora, Budgam, flooding nearby areas. Fortunately, as a precautionary measure, around 9,000 people were evacuated last night, preventing any loss of life.”

He added that weather conditions are improving, particularly in South Kashmir, with most areas now experiencing clear skies. “Water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh are receding, which is a positive development,” he noted.
Relief and rescue teams—including personnel from SDRF, NDRF, police, and revenue departments—are actively engaged in affected low-lying areas, providing timely assistance to residents. “Senior officials from the divisional and district administrations are present on the ground to ensure effective coordination and response,” he said.
Highlighting the role of public cooperation, the Div Com appreciated residents’ support and noted that continuous announcements are being made to keep the public informed and alert. He also shared that evacuations have been completed in six villages of Budgam, with preventive evacuations underway in Srinagar, and urged people to avoid low-lying areas for safety.
Later in the day, Div Com Garg, along with the Deputy Commissioner of Budgam, visited Shalina to inspect ongoing relief and mitigation efforts, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to supporting all affected residents.
