NEW DELHI, Dec 3: “Bhow Bhow”! That was Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury’s quick response on Wednesday to reports that some ruling party members are seeking to bring a privilege motion against her for bringing a dog to Parliament. The remark, delivered outside the House, immediately drew attention and became fodder for social media memes.
Chowdhury, who sparked controversy earlier this week by arriving at Parliament with a stray dog in her car, brushed off questions about the motion with humour. “Bhow bhow…what else should I say,” she told reporters, adding, “We will see when it comes. When it comes, I will give a befitting reply.”
The incident has triggered sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused her of lowering the dignity of Parliament. BJP spokesperson Shehzaad Poonawala described Chowdhury as a “serial offender” and demanded strict action, saying her conduct insulted the institution.
Chowdhury later posted on social media that silence should not be mistaken for weakness, asserting that “cruelty speaks louder than my voice ever could.” She also criticised the government for focusing on the dog row instead of addressing pressing issues such as pollution, labour laws, and the plight of Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
The controversy has quickly escalated into a political row, with the Congress defending Chowdhury’s actions as symbolic and the BJP calling them diversionary tactics. The unusual episode has added to tensions in the Winter Session, highlighting the growing friction between the two parties over parliamentary conduct and priorities.
