Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Monday welcomed the reopening of additional tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir and praised the state government’s efforts to revive tourism following the Pahalgam attack.
In an official statement, the NC chief extended warm greetings to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to visitors worldwide who admire the region for its unparalleled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage on World Tourism Day, observed on September 27.
He noted that as the world highlights the significance of tourism, it is also a moment for reflection and renewed commitment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, where tourism is not only an economic activity but a vital source of livelihood for thousands and an integral part of the social fabric.
Abdullah commended the Omar Abdullah-led government for its efforts to restore confidence in the tourism sector during challenging times, particularly after the Pahalgam tragedy. “The administration responded swiftly and effectively to restore tourist confidence, reaffirming J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. These measures have laid a strong foundation for sustainable, long-term tourism growth,” he said.
Welcoming the reopening of more tourist spots, he emphasized the need for inclusive development, calling for equal focus on regions such as Chenab and Pir Panjal.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had ordered the reopening of several destinations in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday that were closed following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.
The NC president also stressed the importance of sustainable tourism models that safeguard the environment and preserve local culture. “Let this World Tourism Day serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to build a peaceful, progressive, and welcoming Jammu and Kashmir, where every visitor feels valued and every citizen benefits from tourism-driven growth,” he added.
