Jammu: Veteran Congress leader Karan Singh on Thursday voiced concern over the recent violence in Leh, Ladakh, urging the Centre to seriously consider the demands of the region’s youth, including constitutional safeguards, to address their aspirations.
The son of the last Dogra ruler also appealed to the people of Ladakh to remain calm and express their concerns peacefully.
“I am deeply disturbed by the recent unrest in Ladakh, which has claimed four lives and left dozens injured. Since 1947, the people of Ladakh have remained staunchly pro-India and have consistently supported our security forces,” Singh said in a statement.
He noted that the youth in Ladakh appear increasingly frustrated by shrinking employment opportunities.
“One key issue is the absence of a Public Service Commission, forcing them to compete at the all-India level. Inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution seems a reasonable solution,” he said.
Singh urged authorities to carefully assess the demands of the youth and implement concrete measures to safeguard their aspirations, including constitutional protections.
“Addressing these concerns is crucial to prevent the agitation from escalating, which could have long-term security implications. I also appeal to the people to stay calm and voice their demands peacefully,” he added.
