The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has issued strict instructions to all private schools, directing them not to overcharge parents or prescribe unapproved textbooks. The department stated that several complaints had been received regarding schools recommending costly and non-approved books, causing unnecessary financial burden on parents.

DSEK clarified that only books approved by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) or the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) are permitted. Any deviation from the approved list will be treated as a violation of guidelines and will invite strict action.

The Directorate further emphasised that schools cannot force parents to purchase books, uniforms, or stationery from specific vendors. It reiterated that such practices are illegal and exploitative, and warned that institutions found engaging in them will face penalties.

Parents have been advised to report any such grievances directly to the Directorate so that necessary action can be taken. DSEK assured parents that the department is committed to ensuring transparency, affordability, and accountability in the education system.

The Directorate concluded by reminding all schools to adhere to government rules and maintain student welfare as their highest priority.
