Elon Musk’s X Finally Begins Major Cleanup To Remove Spam Bots

Elon Musk has long promised to eliminate spam bots from X (formerly Twitter), and now the platform says that the cleanup process is officially underway. According to Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, the company has already removed over 1.7 million automated spam bots from users’ direct messages (DMs). Bier added that users should start seeing a noticeable improvement in their messaging experience in the coming days.

X Steps Up Spam Removal Efforts

Spam bots have been one of the biggest pain points for X users, flooding DMs with suspicious links and fake accounts. Musk has repeatedly vowed to tackle the issue, calling it a key step toward restoring authenticity and improving user trust on the platform. Bier described the cleanup as a “direct attack” on those degrading the quality and credibility of X’s ecosystem.

Rebuilding The Platform Experience

Bier also revealed that his team is rebuilding the Android app from scratch, aiming for a faster, more secure experience. Alongside spam removal, X is working to strengthen encryption for private chats — an effort that makes little sense without first addressing the bot problem.

To support these initiatives, X is reportedly expanding its engineering team and focusing on rolling out a series of performance and safety upgrades in the weeks ahead.

In short, X appears to be taking one of its most decisive steps yet toward cleaning up spam — a long-awaited move that could finally make the platform feel more authentic and secure.
