New Delhi: Engineer Rashid, Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, has approached a Delhi court seeking permission to vote in the Vice President election scheduled for September 9, court sources said.
Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh is expected to pass an order on Saturday, they added.
Earlier, Rashid, 58, was granted custody parole from July 24 to August 4 to attend the monsoon session of Parliament.
Rashid has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019, following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with a 2017 terror funding case.
The Baramulla MP, who defeated former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, faces allegations of funding separatist and terror groups in the region.
According to the NIA’s FIR, Rashid’s name surfaced during the interrogation of businessman and co-accused Zahoor Watali. After being chargesheeted in October 2019, a special NIA court framed charges against him and others in March 2022 under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against the government), and 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to offences under the UAPA related to terrorism and terror funding.
