The Srinagar Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) held a protest on Saturday demanding the immediate release of its chief and Member of Parliament, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, from jail.

Party leaders and workers, led by AIP MLA Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad, gathered near the Sangarmal Complex, calling for the freedom of Rashid—also known as Engineer Rashid—who represents the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in north Kashmir.

Protestors carried placards and banners, chanting slogans urging Rashid’s release along with that of other political detainees.

Sheikh Abdul Rashid is currently held at Tihar Jail in New Delhi, having been arrested by the NIA in 2019 in connection with a terror funding case.

The demonstrators attempted to march towards Lal Chowk city center but were stopped by police who prevented them from moving forward.

Addressing reporters, MLA Ahmad, representing Langate in north Kashmir, called on all political parties to unite and raise their voices for the release of political prisoners languishing in jails across the country.
